Empowering Women, Empowering Change: Kartini Day with a Green Purpose

In celebration of Kartini Day, PT Sirkular Karya Indonesia (SKI), a subsidiary of PT Impack Pratama Industri Tbk (Impack), hosted a special event promoting women’s empowerment and environmental responsibility. Held at Altira Office Tower on April 21, 2025, the event gathered 45 women from 16 tenant companies across Altira Business Park to honor the spirit of Kartini while introducing impactful sustainability initiatives. Through this event, SKI and Impack aimed not only to drive sustainability within the company, but also to inspire and engage the broader Altira community in adopting responsible waste management practices.

The event centered on the socialization of the TONGKI (Tong Sampah Kita Bersama) program, a waste segregation initiative designed to promote responsible plastic waste management within Altira. The program encourages tenants and staff to sort three types of plastic waste at the source: PET (polyethylene terephthalate), HD/LDPE (polyethylene), and multi-layered plastics or sachets.

To raise awareness about the plastic waste crisis, participants were invited to reflect on the harsh realities of unmanaged waste through a presentation spotlighting conditions at Bantar Gebang, Indonesia’s largest landfill. The presentation emphasized the environmental and social impacts of improperly managed waste, particularly on vulnerable communities living near landfill sites.

As a solution, SKI introduced its upcycling initiative, which involves processing plastic waste sorted through the TONGKI program into durable building material composites. This initiative gives new value to previously low-value plastics by converting them into long-lasting products with a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. In doing so, it not only extends the usability of the plastic but also helps reduce emissions in several ways.

First, it prevents the plastic waste from being incinerated or left to decompose—both of which release harmful emissions.Second, it avoids the need for repeated recycling into short-lived, disposable products, a process that also consumes energy and generates emissions. Instead, the plastics are transformed into durable materials designed for long-term use. At the end of their extended lifecycle, these materials can still be recycled, making the overall approach more efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Aligned with the spirit of Kartini Day, the event also celebrated the role of women in leading environmental change. The active participation and enthusiasm of the women served as a powerful reminder that sustainable progress thrives on inclusivity and diverse perspectives.

This event demonstrated that honoring Kartini is not only about remembering the past, but also about inspiring today’s women—and all individuals—to take meaningful action for a cleaner, more sustainable future. SKI and Impack hopes that through the TONGKI program, participants will become agents of change, spreading environmentally friendly behaviors both in the workplace and in their daily lives.
